I hear the term “Strobist” a lot and it is associated with a Strobist site on Blogspot.com. I asked in a forum recently what the exact definition was. I was told the term relates to those who…ready?….they don’t use strobes. 🙂 Well whatever works I suppose. I shoot with Novatron lights, Alienbee lights and also use my hotshoe flash off the camera. I think it’s one of the best things I’ve done. I use a light stand, adapter, Vivitar flash, 45″ white umbrella and a cheapie trigger. It works fine. I hear people talk about light direction, wrapping, etc. Until I feel this isn’t doing what I want I’ll keep on keeping on with how I set up my lighting.
Stephen Eastwood (www.stepheneastwood.com) has a lot of good, informational material on his web site that relates to this particular topic. One thing to mention is an article of his that covers shooting in harsh sunlight. I read his input about using a ND filter and/or a Circular Polarizer. My next 3-5 shoots followed his lead and I have to say, it was an answer I was looking for that produced the results I needed.
This image is Brittany. She was a new model for me who was a blessing to work with as well as a good friend. I used the lighting setup I mentioned previously. With that and a little post processing, this is what I came up with.
