I found article on rates this on a web site a few ago. It goes along with what I say about pricing yourself too low. And it makes a lot of sense, since while I was doing favors I set an expectation that hosed me in a way.
Person B is a 40 year photography veteran.
Person A: I think there is a place for the $400 photographer. Just MHO.
Person B:
That is true! That being said a year down the road it will be that $400 guy who can’t understand why anyone won’t pay him more than $400!!
Once you become known as the “cheap photographer” no matter how much your work has improved you will be stuck with the “cheap photographer” label.
The only problem is that now any photographer will be compared by price to the “cheap photographer” and knowing clients they will whine and cry when you refuse the job and now you won’t get any business, cheap or high end, because your next label will be the Uncooperative Phographer or the “high and mighty diva photographer”….
If all you want is $400 weddings because it’s a side line I guess that’s ok but if you expect to move forward and grow both your clients and income….it will be difficult.
